Question: Are “walking” shoes necessary for my 1-year-old?

Dr. Jay: It has been my experience that children learn how to walk better in their bare feet. Their little toes get to spread out and may help a little in their balance. Shoes often add weight and bulk to the feet when what we want is mobility and quick response. In this age group, shoes are for protection and fashion but in my opinion, not necessary for them to learn to walk. Pick shoes which let their feet spread out and pick soles which are flexible. Choose comfort over style.
