Cottage Café and Tea Room

Nestled on a brick road just off West Bay in downtown Largo, there sits a cozy little cottage decorated to the gills with antiques and “junque” of all kinds. The Cottage Café is run by the sweetest two ladies you’ll hope to meet. Known locally for years as a perfect spot for afternoon tea, it’s also now open from 9 a.m. for breakfast, till 9 p.m. daily for a yummy Italian dinner, as well!

The Cottage Café was recently featured in the national magazine Tea Time, and it’s easy to see why. It’s a delightful feast for the eyes—especially if you like to browse through dainty china! The outbuildings house a collection of hats, and an antique school bus is stuffed with children’s vintage toys and clothing. But while browsing is fun, please make time in your day to “take tea,” which is the specialty of Debi and Denise, the vibrant owners.

My first visit to the Cottage Café was for a friend’s bridesmaids’ luncheon. The food was delicious, and the tea was as elegant as the décor was eclectic and quirky. When we decided to host a Mother’s Day outing, there was no more perfect place than the Cottage Café. We gathered some of our favorite moms and their little girls, and prepared for an intimate tea party on a Thursday afternoon.

Miss Denise began our tea with the house blend of Cottage Girls tea, which is a sweet mix of berries and rose, served from a delightful mismatch of vintage tea cups and pots. Our scones were delicious! There were fruit and nut scones, cinnamon scones, and blueberry scones, of course accompanied with lemon curd and Devonshire cream. We were taught a bit about the way afternoon tea works, and we had time to relax and enjoy a friendly chat before the next course.

Next came the sandwiches, both savory and sweet. One of the favorites was turkey on raisin bread. The ladies had prepared a special selection for the girls (in case they didn’t want to sample the delicious “grown up” sandwiches). The little girls giggled together as they discussed brothers and friendships and time away with “just the girls.” They loved their flower-shaped peanut butter sandwiches and their ham and cheese croissants. The moms loved that the ladies had willingly accommodated a food allergy with their food choices, and that they had been so detailed in planning our party.

Our tea concluded with a dessert course to envy. There were chocolate cakes and white cakes topped with frosting roses. There were chocolate roulade cakes with whipped cream fillings. There was an amazing lemon cake and—to the delight of the younger patrons at our table—there were even marshmallow teddy bears adorned with sugar eyes and bow ties! We can say that our ladies’ tea was a hit, and each of us left refreshed and pleased to have enjoyed our afternoon in such company, with such culinary refreshment.

Before we left, Debi proudly introduced us to Eddie, the New York chef who now prepares Italian specialties each weeknight. You should consider a dinner visit; the specialties look delicious and very reasonably priced! With the addition of Eddie to the staff, now the Cottage Café is not only a tearoom but a dinner getaway as well!

During our time at the Cottage Café, we had a restful afternoon and delicious food. We had a nostalgic visit to the past as we meandered through the back courtyard exploring treasures and antiques. But most of all, we all enjoyed a perfect mother-daughter “girl time,” and each of us look forward to visiting again with friends and family. It’s fun to discover a locally owned café with such personality and such commitment from its adorable hostesses. Debi’s dream to own both an antique shop and tea room has been delightfully realized. This is the perfect spot to enjoy tea or a meal with friends. Be sure to ask about princess teas, birthday parties, and other themed events!
